How to setup a new hard drive on Vista.

October 24, 2009

As of now you probably have heard of SSD, solid state drive, which is simply your thumb drive on steroids.  SSD have no moving parts and uses NAND flash memory so the have great speed and greater reliability.   With new technology old technolgy gets a discount.  Nowadays a Tera-byte hard drive is less than $100.  You can even find it even less online for around $70.  Recently, I received one as a gift from a friend.

After you install the hard drive, follow the provided installation pamphlet,  you have to set it up on the PC and format it.  Here’s how to do it.

Note: a terabyte hard drive took me a few hours to format the drive so be patience when you are formatting the hard drive.

1. In Control Panel select System and Maintenance and select Create and format hard disk partitions.

System and Maintanence

2.  Now you should see Disk Management application loaded and you should see a disk “Not initialized”.  You wan to right click on the “Disk 1″ area and select initialize.

3. If you hard drive is less than 2TB then you would want to select MBR (Master Boot Record)

Initialize Disk

4.  Now you want to right click on the “unallocated”  area and select New Simple Volume

5.  New Simple Volume Wizard pops up and you continue through.

6.  Pick a drive letter you would like to associate with that new hard drive.  I picked M for “Mass Data”.

7.  Here you want to leave everything as is except for the Volume label.  Change it to whatever your heart desires.

8. Now you are done, your new drive should show up when you click on “My Computer”.

My Vu

January 28, 2009

So, you live in a small apartment and can’t afford the latest and greatest LCD screen TV.  You have a roomate and they take up alot of your space.  Well, now you can escape reality and have your very own entertainment system with My Vu,  your very own viewing experince.  You put this on and you have virtually have a 27″ TV without the cost and space of a real TV.  Of course this works with the Ipod and probably other media player as well.  Too bad this is not available in the US yet.

How to create an encrypted volume using TrueCrypt

January 2, 2009

My favorite file encryption tool is TrueCrypt.  TrueCrypt is a great tool to encrypt a bunch of files at once in real time.  You first have to create a volume, basically a volume is a container.  Once you mount the volume you have an encrypted drive that you can place all your important files there.  No one will be able to get to these files.  As a bonus all the files on the encrypted volume will become completely hidden.  The original post is here.  Here is my version on how to create a volume where you can save all your files.

Step 1 – Create Volume

Step 2 – Create a file container

Step 3 – Select Standard TrueCrypt volume

Step 4 – Select the Volume Location and Name and save it to the desktop

Step 5 – Select your Encryption Options, I would stick to the defaults, but you can pick whatever encryption method you like

truecrypt5

Step 6 – Type in the size you would like it to be.  I always create a file that is smaller than my flash drive so that I can move it conveniently.

Step 7 – Create a password, the longer the better

Step 8 – Format the volume and you are done, mount the file and you have an encrypted volume.

Torrents

December 21, 2008

Wikipedia list torrents as “…generally signifies a strong flow of something, especially fluids and particles, and in particular water or rain.”   In the Internet world torrents are strong flows of bits and bytes from seeders to leechers. Well, not quite exactly.  Torrents are nothing more than a file you download  to start your downloads.  Here is a short description of how to download movies, music, pictures using torrents.

1. Download a torrent client, here is a list, and install it.  I personally use Bittorrent.

2. Browse one of these torrent sites and search for stuff you like to download.

3. Download the torrent file you picked.

4. Open the torrent file with your torrent client (Bittorrent) and it will start downloading.

Happy Downloading

Websites: Spock.com and Wink.com

October 26, 2008

I discovered two interesting site spock.com and wink.com.  Spock.com will find people on the web with just a name search.  I searched my name and found there were many Vu Nguyen’s out there, there was a lot.  More interesting is the fact that I saw at least two female profiles with my name.  It’s more of a fun tool than an actual people finder.

Wink.com asks for a bit more info, name and location.  This gives a more refine search.  I’m placed at the top of the list on wink.com but i was nowhere to be found on spock.com.  You’re not gonna find missing people on these sites but it’s still fun to see all the people with your name.

Both sites have a free registration to sign up.  Spock.com offers very little reason to sign up for an account. However wink.com allows you to update your info, find out how many people searched for you, get notified when someone searches for you, get alerts when someon leaves you a message.  Probably the most spy worthy thing is both sites let’s you track your friends online activities.  I signed up for wink.com just for fun.  So far two people have searched for me.  Try them out and see how many people search for you.

SoCal embargoed country?

October 23, 2008

So I’ve been working on an issue with an online training program at work.  The users and myself have been able to log into the site but once in, there is no menu/catalog.  So, to test out what’s wrong I uninstalled Java and then tried to reinstall it.  According to www.java.com I’m “located in an embargoed country” – I’m in San Diego. Now I can’t install Java.

Solution:  Instead of using the online installation package, use the download option.  Download the package to your desktop and run the install pack.  The installtion works after it’s downloaded onto your desktop.

Print Screen

October 22, 2008

I had a user email me today and this is her exact quote.

“Would you please set up my computer so that my “Print Screen” button works?”

She wanted the key to print out whatever that was on her screen.  A reasonable request.  I explained to her what the “Print Scrn” key actually does.  Not everybody knows this so I’ll point it out.  If you press the “Print Scrn” key on your keyboard what it will do is make a snapshot of what you see on your screen.  The image is stored in RAM and just sits there.  To retrieve the image you have to open a program like Word, Paint, etc.  Then you have to paste the image onto the blank file.  That’s how you use “Print Scrn”.

Could you see how confusing this is for someone who is computer illiterate?  They should really rename that key as “Copy Screen”.  That at least will clear up some confusion.  I can just imaging my sister sitting at her desk hitting “Print Scrn” a few times and looking at the printer to see if anything printed.

Windows Update

October 21, 2008

Apparently, Microsoft does not want us to update through Internet Explorer any longer.  I usually update computers at work with Windows Update through IE.  I’m not sure when they decided on this or even if there was news about this but here is the screen shot of the message I received.  If you look at the address bar there is a “thanks” – huh, thanks for not updating our software MS.

Note:  This is done from Windows XP station with IE 6.  Have not tested on Vista yet.

Update this!

The new Yahoo Calendar.

October 14, 2008

There are plenty of calendars out there to chose from.  Any major site from Google, MSN, AOL, etc., will provide you with a basic online calendar.  Yahoo came out with a new beta Calendar.  Not clear why they waited so long to revamp their calendar, better late than never.

I’ve been using the old Yahoo calendar for about a year now and it was pretty basic.  You had your different views for day, week, month.  The calendar had a little picture at the top corner, probably from Flickr.  Very basic stuff, nothing fancy.

The new calendar looks much better.  Tabs for the different views, flickr images randomly placed in your calendar.  A feature I like is the multiple calendars.  I created a calendar for my girlfriend and made it pink, mine is blue.  Her events are highlighted in pink and mine are in blue.  It makes it easy to read.  The thing I like most about the new calendar is the “To Do” list on the right.  It is easy to read and easy to add more to the list.  So far everything is working great, no glitches.  This might be my favorite online Calendar (for now).

You do the Hulu

Hulu

Hulu

Hulu.com is a site where you can watch full length TV episodes legally.  Hulu was founded in March of 2007 by NBC Universal and News Corp.  Unlike Youtube.com all contents here are legally obtained from the networks.  Currently there are more than 100 content provider including Fox, NBC, WB, USA Network, and a bunch of other small networks.

I recently tried out the service to watch Fox’s new thriller Fringe.  I saw the pilot episode but have missed the next three.  I went straight to the lateste episode 4 – The Arrival.  The total time for the show was 49 minutes with only six commerical breaks all less than 1 minute each.  Hulu offers a few social networking features such as star rating, reviews, and discussions.  I plan on signing up for an account and see what other features are available for registered users.  The service was great, too bad I can’t say the same for the episode.
