How to increase taskbar thumbnail preview size in Windows 7

March 6, 2010

Here’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time.  I’ve always thought the preview size on Windows 7 were a bit too small.  I have a decent size monitor, about 22 inches, and so whenever I hover over the taskbar to preview what I’m working on the size is so small that I have to move closer to the monitor to see what’s going on.  This little registry hack makes the size to a much more easily viewable size that I’m comfortable with.  You can get the instructions here on how to change the size.

How to install a “Patch”

Vista Safe Mode

Vista Safe Mode

So, I’ve got this software that I’ve downloaded and it won’t work without a “patch”.  The executuable file will ask me to register and provide a serial number.  I don’t want to do either.  So I downloaded a “patch” to fix that.  When I ran the “patch” my anti virus McaFee would quarantine the patch.   According to McaFee this patch is some kind Trojan/spy ware.  Go figure.  I tried restoring the file from the quarantine and it would show up in the folder.  As soon as I clicked on the patch the file would be be quarantine again and the patch wasn’t able to do it’s magic.

You can’t disable MacFee antivirus because that would defeat the whole purpose of an antivirus program.  To resolve this I can either uninstall Macfee and then re-install it after I ran the patch but that is too much work and too many reboots.  So the solution to this is I rebooted in Safe Mode.  Windows Vista safe mode somehow disabled MacFee real-time antivirus agent.  I ran the patch and it worked.  Now my software is working smothly without any “request”.  Haven’t tried on other system or antivirus software.  Let me know if this help you patch things up.

OpenDNS

November 10, 2008

DNS is Domain Name System.  DNS translate web domains into Internet IP address.  All large ISP have their own DNS servers.  These servers provide all the IP address conversion quickly so that your computer gets to whichever web page you are looking for.  These servers are strategically located all over the US.  When you use the ISP provided DNS servers there are no way to manage it or receive any kind of reports.  ISP provided DNS is a one trick pony.  Does excatly what’s it is supposed to do and nothing else.  So what if you want to manage or at least view some kind of reporting on your Internet usage?  OpenDNS is your answer.

opendnscustom

OpenDNS works the same way except it allows control and features that your ISP does not provide.  The first feature I like is the filter.  You can set OpenDNS to filter out websites you feel inappropriate for your web surfing.  Open DNS provides six filtering levels high, moderate, low, minimal, none, and custom.  I use custom filtering for granular control.  On the custom filter page you can also set individual domain to either always block or never block.

opendnsshortcut

Another feature is the shortcuts.  I just started using this feature and find it very useful.  For instance, I personally use Yahoo mail as my primary email so I created a shortcut mail to point to mail.yahoo.com.  So when I type in my address bar mail I get automatically routed to Yahoo mail.  I also created one for gmail, my secondary email.

OpenDNS adds a layer of security that helps my home network from connecting to websites that are either phising or contains malware.  OpenDNS works either by individual PCs or by your complete home network.  I use the complete home network.  Here is how to setup OpenDNS on your system.

Passport photos for $0.99 (not your usual $7)

US Passport

I’m planning to take a long trip to Vietnam Spring of 2009.  My passport had expired and so I have to get my passport renewed fast.  I’ve heard of horror stories where people were unable to get their passport in time and had to cancel their trip.

I went to travel.state.gov and downloaded a renewal form.  Filled out all the revelant information online and then printed out the form.  To produce your passport the government require that you submit 2 passport photos that are 2×2 inches.  At a local drug store and other photo processing places they are willing to spend the 1 minute to take your photo and print out 2 passport photo for around $7.  I went the cheap way and took the photo with the help of my friend Steve.  He took a few head shots of me shoulder up.  I stood in front of a plain wall for the pictures.

I uploaded the picture to Snapfish.com and order the wallet size pictures.  Wallet size are 2×3 inches and cost $0.99 at Snapfish.com.  When the pictures arrived, a set of 4, all I had to do was crop the top one inch.

I mailed the form, my photos, and $75 check (renewal fee).  Three weeks later I have my passport in my hand.
