Prop 8 – Ban on Gay Marriages

October 29, 2008

Next to the presidential pick Prop 8 is probably the next biggest political decision on California voters mind.  According to the California voter guide, Prop 8 “Eliminates right of same-sex couples to marry. Initiative Constitutional Amendment.” Both sides of the prop are on the very end of the spectrum. One side wants to eliminate a right, and the other side wants equal rights. Does this sound familiar to you? Sounds like discrimination to me. Just reading the title of the prop says it all – “eliminates rights”.

Eliminating a right of an individual, or in this case a couple, to be married based on their sexual preference is discrimination. Same sex marriage is no different from heterogeneous marriages. Two individual making a life long commitment to one another, that’s what marriage is all about. Everyone living in this country should be able to pursue their dreams and have the same rights as everyone else. No one group of people should have more or less rights than another group of people.

People tend to quickly forget past struggles and live life based on their own current condition. Our freedom today is not of our doing but of people before us. The people who fought to eliminate discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin. Even age discrimination is prohibited by federal law.

I’m opposed to any laws where one group of people has more rights than another group of people.  When I voted on my absentee ballot last week it was an easy decision for me. I hope you make the right decision on November 4th, 2008.
