How to disable the NumLock on a IBM Thinkpad T43

For those of unfortunate users of the old IBM Thinkpad T43 there is an annoying feature that enables a numlock on the keyboard.  This should fix most Thinkpads that have numbers on the keyboards instead of the regular 10-key on the right side.

1. Start->Run->Regedit

2. Navigate to HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard

3. Change the value for InitialKeyboardIndicators from 2 to 0.

    Hey! Thank you very much! It was driving me crazy. I had disabled it in the BIOS and followed other people’s advice, but this did the trick.

    I also had a problem with Num Lock feature in T43 where it will not allow me to type in normally and automatically enabled the Num Lock on the keypad. So instead of showing the letter, it comes up with a number!

    I tried following the steps provided above, however, typing in REGEDIT in the Run command is next to impossible because of the problem with Num Lock.

    As a resolution, I pulled up the On-Screen keyboard from Start > All Programs > Accessories > Accessibility > On-Screen Keyboard, and from there, disabled the Num Lock key and voila! My problem is gone!

    if you connected an external keyboard the registry string might be different. you could by the way connect an external KB and hit numlock… this worked for me.
    because trying to go start >run> regedit. my KB typed reged5t cause numlock was already on :-)
